Are you fed up spending hours trawling through your notes in search of the most critical and relevant information to compile a succinct record of a meeting? If so, this course is for you!

Minutes are an essential document that should be an accurate record of ‘who has to do what by when’. They need to provide a reliable historical record – and a baseline for future reference – of the key discussions, decisions and action points arising from a meeting. Developed by the facilitator of IPAA Victoria’s popular Grammar and punctuation and Public sector writing workshops, this unique course provides the skills and strategies you’ll need to develop a dependable system for recording accurate and relevant minutes of any meeting.

What will you learn?

As well as developing a consistent system and practical templates for minute-taking, the course explores appropriate formats, styles and language for presenting the outcomes of different types of meetings.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • identify critical information to be minuted

  • create an agenda for capturing relevant information

  • develop an effective template for minutes for your organisation

  • integrate a standardised numbering system to facilitate cross-referencing

  • use an action sheet to record ‘who has to do what by when’ and keep track of action items

  • become familiar with the appropriate language and style for formal and informal meetings

  • prepare a checklist of tasks to be carried out before, during and after meetings

  • develop a system for recording the names and contact details of meeting attendees.

What should you expect?

Skilled Minute-taking uses a combination of hands-on exercises, document reviews and critiques to help participants identify and capture key information from meetings, prepare clear and accurate minutes, and develop greater efficiency in writing minutes from their notes.

As well as her regular courses at IPAA’s head office, Jeanette Learmont can develop and deliver in-house workshops tailored to the writing styles and requirements of specific government departments.

Who is the facilitator?

Jeanette Learmont is a highly regarded communications consultant and presenter, who has established a national reputation with her dynamic classes in contemporary writing. Over the past 15 years, she has delivered her engaging workshops to hundreds of public and private sector employees across Australia and internationally.

Jeanette has developed a wide range of writing skills programs, covering government, academic and technical writing, as well as specialist courses on grammar, punctuation, proofreading and minute-taking. She is co-author of a book on effective business writing, as well as a contributing author to a national technical writing post-graduate course.
