Managing Budgets and Financial Plans

The public expects that the money used by its governments and councils will be carefully allocated and prudently managed. This practical full-day workshop aims to overcome some of the mystery that traditionally surrounds public sector budgets, and to help public sector employees develop the skills to manage and contribute to budgets for government programs and projects.

As a foundation-setting introduction to public sector budgeting, Mark Priadko’s popular workshop provides vital tools for team leaders, program managers and project managers who may benefit from a basic knowledge of budgeting in their day-to-day work.

What will you learn?

By the end of the workshop, you will have developed:

  • A practical understanding of government budgeting frameworks and processes, and the core information requirements for budgeting

  • A strong grasp of contemporary budgeting practice, concepts and terminology

  • Core skills for developing and adapting budgets, and monitoring and reporting on budgets

  • An understanding of the difference between an accrual budget and a cash budget

  • Knowledge of how to manage your budget consistently with whole-of-government processes.

What should you expect?

This IPAA Victoria workshop will provide you with practical tools and techniques to help you manage your budget in a public sector environment. The workshop will draw on a case study to demonstrate a range of skills for effectively managing a budget in a government agency or business. The sessions can also be tailored to include specific financial management policies and/or reporting formats from participants’ organisations or tiers of government.

Who is the facilitator?

Mark Priadko has more than 25 years’ experience working with public finances – including as a budget manager and in various executive roles with the South Australian Department of Treasury and Finance.

Over the past 15 years, Mark has worked with various governments, universities and not-for-profit organisations on initiatives to improve their financial management and develop their staff. His love of learning, experience and understanding of financial strategy, and natural curiosity give Mark a unique insight into how organisations and their various functions and projects can be improved.
