If public speaking is part of your job, this course could mean the difference between an adrenalin-fuelled nightmare and a compelling presentation that delivers your message with pizzazz.
Speaking in public can be a daunting task – even for the most experienced professional. This unique one-day course has been specially developed with IPAA and the behavioural insights specialists at Method9 to help public sector employees build their confidence and competence as public speakers. From assessing audiences and handling tricky questions, to optimising your stance, composure and voice control, this comprehensive course provides all the advice you’ll ever need to present with authority and capture the attention of your audience.
What will you learn?
By the end of the workshop, you will have developed:
write and deliver engaging presentations with confidence and clarity
assess individual audience responses and adjust your delivery appropriately
handle questions with composure and authority
assess your performance and manage feedback
optimise your pace, voice control and body language
identify common presentation ‘errors’ to avoid.
What should you expect?
The course is an experiential one with a small group, and each participant will be asked to arrive with a three-minute presentation to deliver to the group. This may be part of a presentation you have delivered previously, or one you might conceivably deliver in the future (no slides, PowerPoints or handouts please). The group will discuss each presentation and provide suggestions on improving its content and delivery. Participants are also asked to answer some ‘preliminary questions’ about their presentation history when they register, and will receive a workbook and a ‘presentation tips’ handout on the day.
The facilitator is also available for follow-up one-on-one coaching for participants looking to develop more advanced or specific presentation skills after the workshop.
Who is the facilitator?
This course will be facilitated by Bruce Hughes, who conducted his first workshop for IPAA Victoria in 2008, and has helped thousands of people to hone their presentation skills – from executives and government leaders, to TV presenters and elite athletes. For more than 20 years, Bruce has had a dual career as a corporate facilitator and a professional actor. He has acted alongside Jude Law, Hugo Weaving and Geoffrey Rush, and his work as a facilitator has taken him to New York, Munich, Delhi, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Bruce has more than 10,000 hours of experience in coaching groups in presentation skills and the art of building effective working relationships.
