From budgets and regulatory guidelines, to stakeholder liaison and ministerial authorisation, the work of a project management team knows few bounds.
Managing a project in the public sector can sometimes feel like walking a tightrope. There are the invariable challenges of different policy domains, multiple stakeholder demands, reporting and transparency requirements, executive and ministerial approvals – let alone all the usual pressures of time and budget. This innovative program aims to help project officers and managers develop their strategic management capabilities, in order to work better with stakeholders and sponsors, and to design and deliver projects that can make a real difference in the community.
What will you learn?
This full-day course requires participants to assess the strategic context in which a project takes place, define the personnel and resources required, identify risks, assess stakeholder requirements, measure outcomes, and navigate a project through its governance and approval processes.
By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:
Prepare a strategic ‘project on a page’ schematic
Define the work required over the four stages of the project management lifecycle
Develop a comprehensive workplan, including project roles and responsibilities
Understand project estimating factors and their impacts on timelines
Prepare project reports and a stakeholder engagement plan
Review governance and decision-making processes.

The Project management course involves presentations from our seasoned facilitator, as well as working case studies and a mix of small group activities using project management tools and templates. As a value-add for IPAA participants, the course includes a follow-up one-on-one telephone coaching session to keep you focused on your project deliverables and answer any further questions you may have.
Who is the facilitator?
As a Project Manager at Jacobs, Andrew has undertaken a range of project management training aimed at delivering medium to large scale consulting projects (up to $5 million in value). He regularly delivers training to Government agencies in the areas of business case development, strategic planning and policy development
Andrew has over 20 years consulting experience in the public and private sector across transport, Defence, health, education, energy, water, aviation, emergency management, oil/gas and mining.
Andrew leads and delivers public policy and program design, implementation and evaluation projects. He has worked across all spheres of Government, every jurisdiction and delivered policy and program advisory services in UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, Philippines and New Zealand
Tony joined the Jacobs team in 2011, after completing 25 years’ service with the Department of Defence (Army).
He has significant experience in the Construction and Project Management / Contract Administrator fields, including experience as a Construction Supervisor, onsite Construction Manager and Project Manager.
Tony has developed unique skills in Construction and Project/Program Management (including project/program scheduling, cost control, risk management, contract administration, procurement); forged from extensive on job experience delivering capital works projects for State and Commonwealth agencies and private sector clients. Tony is experienced in delivering a range of projects, across different sectors, ranging from $100K to $250M.
