How will we be leading in 2030?
Often juxtaposed, leadership and management are mutual prerequisites for success in the public sector. From the skill of being able to have a difficult conversation with an under-performing team member, to being flexible enough to encourage high performing individuals to flourish, and improve collaboration, a leader is destined to wear many different hats.
However, from leading self, through managing skills, leading others and challenging people’s thinking, all delivered in a way that is authentic, is a real challenge. Leadership and management capabilities within the public sector are recognised as areas that need a little more improvement particularly given an ever-changing environment and expectations.
Join us for an innovative approach to the trials and triumphs of leadership in the public sector, as a diverse group of presenters draw on data (such as the Victorian Public Sector Commission People Matter Survey), other research and good practice to offer practical ideas that would help experienced and emerging public sector leaders and managers improve their ability to lead and to manage people and teams in an ever-changing public sector, and discuss what they see for the future of leadership in the public sector.
You will hear among other things:
organisational culture and change and career development
the personal responsibilities of the leader in the public sector, in particular in local government and the Victorian Public Service
learnings from the private sectors
how relationships and authentic leadership can influence trust, sense of connection with strategy to achieve high performance outcomes
how One VPS will shape the future of the VPS that will build a workplace culture that encourages and enables cross-departmental mobility, collaboration and innovation
perspectives on what young people want and need to be a high-performing leader look like in 2030
