Does a culture of integrity become the foundation for internal trust within the public sector?
Trust in the public service as an institution and in public sector bodies is much higher than trust in government and some public sector-dominated professions are amongst the most trusted professions of all. At a time when community trust in ‘political institutions’ is seen to be dropping, trust in specific public sector professions seems to be rising. What does this distinction tell us about our profession? What do we know about trust in the public sector in terms of data and, within the limits of Westminster, what can we do to build trust in our sector, remind people about our trusted status and better leverage community trust in the work of our profession?
Notwithstanding that the public sector is seen as highly trustworthy, oversight bodies, the media and others report that there are gaps in the public sector culture of integrity. Results from the State of the Service Survey by the Victorian Public Sector Commission indicate that 45 per cent of employees did not feel confident that they would be protected should they report misconduct at work.
We will hear speakers share their thoughts around organisational and individual trust, culture and leadership, values, integrity and ethics, and insights on preventing and managing corrupt practices.
We will also explore:
What data do we know about public opinion on trust in the public service?
Why does trust in the public sector actually matter?
Is being trusted part of being a ‘fit for purpose’ organisation? And how would we build trust in our own public sector organisations and in the sector as a whole?
How would advertising agencies suggest that we leverage community trust in our sector to promote the value and work of the public sector?
