Strategic Thinking

  • VHA Meeting room Level 6, 136 Exhibition Street Melbourne VIC 3000 Australia (map)

Strategic thinking is not only critical to successful policy development and service delivery – it is vital for a fulfilling and enjoyable public sector career.

Think of anyone who has made a difference in your working life and chances are they’re a strategic thinker. They will explore problems from different angles, seek different points of view, and bring others along on the journey to identify solutions. This acclaimed half-day workshop draws on a variety of time-tested strategic thinking models to arrive at a simple framework that can be used to improve almost any public sector task – big or small, policy or operational, individual or as part of a team.

What will you learn?

This half-day course provides a framework – and an attitudinal sea-change – for approaching your day-to-day work more strategically.

By the end of the course, you will know:

  • When and how to apply strategic thinking in any task that involves planning for change

  • How to use a strategic thinking framework to analyse challenges, set objectives, and identify strategies and solutions for positive change

  • How to evaluate success and failure in strategic thinking

  • How to enhance your approach to a task of your choice.

What should you expect?

This highly interactive course involves the presentation of a strategic thinking framework with explanatory case studies, followed by hands-on activities in which the framework is applied to different tasks in policy development, service delivery, advocacy, and stakeholder relationships. Participants will be asked to describe and analyse tasks they are currently working on or planning – and each participant will leave the session with a tangible enhancement to a strategic task in which they are currently involved.
