History Project

To help shed light on the history of IPAA and the Victorian public sector, an exhibition has been produced called IPAA Victoria: Professionalising Public Administration. We are also commencing work on the IPAA Oral History Project to include filmed interviews with some of the sector's former leaders.
This exhibition has been touring government department lobbies and is available for display if you have an appropriate venue or event, just contact us. The exhibition measures 5m x 1.8m. Download text of the exhibition.
Did you know?
It was not until the 1870s that Victorian parliamentarians were paid.
The debates were fierce. Conservatives thought they should remain unpaid, reserving positions of power for ‘men of substance' and making entry to politics more difficult for low to middle income men. But the Labo(u)r Government of the day led by Premier Berry introduced the first provisional salary of 300 pounds per year.
Around the same time, more than 200 senior civil servants, such as magistrates, wardens and department heads were retrenched, with Premier Berry citing lack of funds. Politicians' salaries were finally made permanent in 1886.
