IPAA Victoria’s recent Internal Communications Summit on 18 October 2011 brought together more than 60 Internal Comms practitioners from across three levels of government in Victoria.

Under the theme of Innovate, Engage and Inspire, a diverse range of speakers looked at the challenges, successes and failures of communicating “inside the tent”.

Helen Slater, Director of Strata Communications in New Zealand spoke about how New Zealand’s public sector has managed its internal communications during the Christchurch earthquake.

Bernie Carolan, Chief Executive Transport Ticketing Authority and Pam White, Former Chief Executive Officer, Victorian Bush Fire Reconstruction and Recovery, spoke frankly about their experience of managing crises and the importance of communicating strategically during those times.

Su Reardon from Australian Business Theatre looked at communication that didn’t just relate to implementing strategies, but that also helped to shift workplace culture and direction.

The Summit finished with a panel discussion on internal conversation and community building, looking at social media and the ever increasing range of communication channels. Three speakers provided their perspectives on how technology can be used to effectively engage with employees, participants and stakeholders. Speakers included: Amanda Finnis: Manager, Online Strategy, Department of Business and Innovation. Patrick McCormick: General Manager, Online Collaboration and Citizen Engagement Strategic Communication Branch, Department of Justice.
